Our approach to food
eating Seasonal AND locally
It was the middle of January, and the grocery store somehow had satchels upon satchels of Haas avocados for sale. How could this be? A tropical fruit somehow made its way to a store in Washington in the middle of winter? On one hand… yay for the modern marvels of logistics. But on the other hand, just because we can, does it mean we should?
When you eat seasonal produce, you pick things at the height of freshness. When items are picked ripe, that is when they have their highest concentrations of nutrients. When you eat locally, you know that the food did not have to travel far, thereby retaining freshness and nutrients. Also, kudos to you for reducing your carbon footprint!
Variety is the spice of life
Why should we have a routine diet? The thing with routine is that it can become, well… a bit routine. Food is something that you put into yourself daily. If you are sticking something into your body multiple times a day, wouldn’t you want it to be the best?
Doing routine things also dulls the senses. Making the same thing over and over just makes things uninteresting. But when you look in the garden and notice, “Hey, tomatoes and corn are coming in… what can I do with that?” the wheels in your mind start turning and you invent new dishes. You exercise thoughts and test theories as to which foods in which combinations and which preparation styles go well together. I look forward to not knowing exactly what we are going to eat every day, but whatever it is, I will do my best to make it novel, interesting, fresh, and nutritious.
