Kunekune pigs

Pigs… they normally conjure up images of stinky, muddy, fat messes. It’s possible that conventional hogs might live up to that negative stereotype, but not the kunekune pig. Originally from New Zealand, this breed of pig is our favorite on the homestead. They don’t root up the place, can subsist on grass, and are super affectionate. These guys are basically dogs who eat grass. They love belly rubs, and are ever so enthusiastic about kitchen scraps.

The trade off is that these guys are a bit slow to mature: 18 to 24 months before they reach slaughter weight. They max out at around 250 pounds… not quite as large as the commercial pig, but perfect for a family.
